Community Gardens

With its idyllic location along the banks of Bear Creek as it flows from the Flatirons of Boulder, Colorado, many people feel that this church stands on sacred ground.

Members working together to create a new garden path to the church.

As part of our commitment to be a sustainable church, the landscape is designed to incorporate principles of xeriscape gardening and to use plants best suited to this site, including natives plants as much as possible.

Community Garden Parties/Work Day Schedule

At various times throughout the year, we have several community events planned for caring our gardens.

Adopt-A-Garden

If you would like to adopt and care for a special garden, please feel free and/or contact Cathy Russell at 303-543-3807.

Weed Pulling

Everyone is invited to pull weeds whenever they have a chance!

Landscape as Spirit - I (Cathy Russell) find the grounds of our church to be infused with a magical spirit that gives me a deep sense of peace just walking to church.  The words of Martin Mosko, a Boulder resident and Buddhist, resonate with me, "By engaging and delighting the senses, the garden brings the mind to attention, to a fuller awareness not only of the natural world, but also of the sacred that inhabits the space.  It is landscape as spirit."

I enjoy working in the gardens at our church for many reasons. The main reason is a mystery to me, but has to do with my being and moving in Nature.  The second is that I see our gardens as a kind of outreach.  Our grounds are a public space where visitors to our church may encounter the Spirit.  Third, I see our grounds as a microcosm for all of nature, which we seek to sustain in all our actions.

Garden Plans: Dave and Anne Carson, longtime dedicated landscapers at our church, have designed a wonderful plan for the gardens around the patio and labyrinth. The Council has approved this beautiful plan, which includes the irrigation system, trees, and outlines of gardens, but not yet specific perennials or annuals.

Garden Table: Carl and his friend John Smathers (along with help of many men in the congregation) have put together the heavy picnic table.  Thank you Carl and friends! And thanks to Carl for all the other things he does!

Compost Quarters: We now have a wonderful new home to compost all our yard wastes. Carl Love spent hours preparing this spot. Have Carl tell the convoluted story of how the Composting Quarters came to be.

Patio Chairs: The Memorial Committee has purchased 20 black iron, stacking patio chairs.

"A contemplative garden is a place to discover the magic of who we are and how we join with the world around us."
~ Martin Mosko from his book
"Landscape as Spirit."
